Try starting and running it with the fuel petcock in the "PRIME" position - it sounds to me like you have a leak in the vacuum line preventing enough gasoline from getting to the carb - it trickles down enough into the float chamber to start and run for a minute or so and then the engines starves for gasoline and stops running.
Keep the rubber side down
